Encyclopaedia
of Underwater Archaeology - Vol 2- Master Seafarers: The Phoenicians and the
Greeks
Muriel Moity, Murielle Rudel and Alain Xavier Wurst
This
publication presents the underwater archaeological exploration of two ancient
civilisations which formed the cradle of western culture- Phoenicia and Greece.
The Phoenicians were a people of sailors, traders, engineers and artisans who,
as early as the 3rd millennium BC, mastered the art of navigation. Their
influence soon spread to the Minoan, Mycenaean and Greek civilisations- complex
and very different societies linked by the Mediterranean, and their burgeoning
ability to navigate its sea.
The Ancient Greeks lived on hundreds of islands and had only limited fertile
land at their disposal. It was inevitable that they would soon turn to the sea
for their survival. Thalassa, the Ancient Greek word for the sea, was their
springboard for commercial, colonial and cultural expansion.
Phoenician and Greek seafarers explored and colonised the area around the
Mediterranean and the Black Sea, leaving submerged harbours and the wrecks of
their beautiful and superbly designed ships to testify to their ingenuity.
Exploration by underwater archaeologists has revealed many details of their
daily life, their trading practices, culture, religion and warfare.
