Alexandria -
The Submerged Royal Quarters
Franck Goddio, André Bernand, Etienne Bernand, Ibrahim Darwish, Françoise Dunand, Arthur de Graaw, Zsolt Kiss,
Jean Yoyotte

This publication presents for the first time the results of the excavation work carried out in Alexandria by the European Institute of Underwater Archaeology. This work was made possible with the support of the Hilti Foundation and Discovery Communication Inc.

The 1992 season saw the first topographical surveys, and the subsequent archaeological campaigns of 1996 and 1997 are reported and analysed in detail.

The 1992 survey was undertaken using the most advanced techniques available. These allowed the team to determine the topography of the now submerged Ptolemaic port. The ancient city plan, a wealth of statues and other artefacts, remains of buildings and the layout and function of the city’s harbour installations are discussed at length.

-Numerous well known archaeologists, scientists, historians and photographers, specialists in their field, have collaborated on this book, resurrecting the fabled metropolis of Alexander the Great and Antony and Cleopatra.

-This publication describes one of the most impressive discoveries in underwater archaeology, which has greatly extended our knowledge of ancient Alexandria and Ptolemaic Egypt. The Discovery Channel broadcast a documentary on the excavations in 142 countries and 23 languages, reaching a worldwide audience of around 30 million. More than 4.4 million people watched this documentary in the US alone.
