Reefs
and Wrecks
Sue Daly
The
seas around the Channel Islands experience one of the greatest tidal movements
on earth. Theses swirling waters are vital to the wealth of wild life that
thrives around the coasts but for the human residents these tides can be fatal.
These two film, narrated by John Nettles, reveal the danger and beauty of the
Islands' reefs and wrecks.
In
"Reefs of Iron" we explore some of the Channel Islands' shipwrecks.
From the earliest traders to the pioneers of sail and steam, ships and human
lives have been stolen by the sea. Some fell foul of reef or tide while others
were condemned by weather or simple human error. These un-natural offerings from
the world above the waves quickly become a haven for marine life. This film
looks at some of the wrecks left today and asks why so many sea creatures make
them there home?
"Living
on the Edge" tells the story of the coast of Jersey, a wild and turbulent
realm where ocean collides with land. Twice daily the water draws back to reveal
over seventy square miles of seashore providing a home for marine life and
thousands of wintering seabirds. For people too this world between tides is a
haven; a place for play and for work, a source of food and a chance to glimpse
life benaeath the waves.
