Silent Symphony
Tony Wu
Silent
Symphony is Tony Wu’s first book, published together with
co-photographer William Tan. This 168-page coffee table book was awarded the
Grand Prize for Best Book of the Year at the 28th annual Festival of Marine Images in Antibes,
France.
The
book is the culmination of six years of traveling, photography and painstaking
labour to produce a world-class collection of underwater images. Tony and
William spent hundreds of hours in the ocean studying marine life and working to
portray the ocean’s inhabitants artistically, and hundreds more on dry land
researching, cataloguing and writing about their experiences and encounters.
Silent
Symphony is structured as an extended analogy with a musical
symphony. It comprises four ‘movements’ - Discovery, Fascination, Passion
and Epiphany. Each section of the book describes various aspects of the undersea
world, but like the four movements of a symphony, they weave together to
communicate an even greater message.
Through
their images and concise text, Tony and William show us that the sea, like a
musical symphony, derives her beauty and meaning from the intricate relationship
among all of her parts. Damage to any part of the ocean will adversely affect
the integrity of the marine world, like the removal of string instruments would
diminish the capacity of an orchestra. In this way, the ‘silent’ symphony
under the waves needs us to listen, as much as a symphony of music we enjoy on
land.
